When storms in life come, whether it is financial, emotional or physical, where do you turn? It is interesting because when things are going well, there is no need to question the very things that we lean on or where put our trust. However, it is when those foundations are shaken that we see if they are a sure place for our trust and confidence. Many people ask why does the Lord allow trouble or hardship to come upon us. Well one reason maybe to test the very things that we trust in to reveal to us their validity or strength.
The Lord has given us promises that during those hard and difficult times that He will be a place of refuge and strength for us. There are times when He allows us to go through travail to reveal His strength and HIs ability to care for us during those difficult times. He desires to show us that we are not alone and that He will take care of us and bring us through to the other side.
In addition to providing us refuge and strength, the Lord gathers us unto Himself to comfort and encourage our struggling hearts. He desires to reveal to us His purposes and plans during this time. He also picks us up when we are discouraged and weary from the journey. He gives us eyes to see the bigger picture and not just the obstacles that are standing in front of us in that moment. The Lord desires to increase our faith to believe in Him as our Lord and Saviour in all things.
It is also during this time that the Lord reveals Himself as our compass. He gives us direction and guidance in how to maneuver through the difficult times. As we trust Him, he also pours forth His grace upon us to carry us through the heartache.
It is during hardship that the Lord is continually beckoning us to lift our eyes and to place them on Him, not our circumstances. Our answers do not come from human reasoning, they come from revelation, God’s revelation. He will be our everything if we learn to lean on Him and be dependent on Him for our needs. The Lord will never disappoint those who faith is in Him. By trusting in Him, we will see our needs met and when hardships come, we can be assured and confident that the Lord will carry us through.

As homeopathy becomes more well known, it is becoming confused in the general public with natural medicine, folk remedies and other alternative healing methods. It is important to know the difference, because using homeopathic remedies in an allopathic (meaning, symptom suppressive) way will not work in producing a sustainable cure.
Folk remedies are practices and substances that have been handed down through the generations which may or may not provide palliative (pain reducing or comfort giving) care. They tend to not have any true therapeutic value in reversing disease or changing the underlying medical condition.
Natural medicine is a broad label for a wide variety of practices and substances that make use of non-pharmaceutical, mostly plant, vitamin or mineral based products, and non-invasive interventions usually given by academically trained clinicians, or persons who have apprenticed to experts. These practices and substances have been researched and replicated with success and do tend to have true therapeutic value in reversing disease and changing symptoms underlying medical conditions.
Natural medicine tends to fall into two camps: (1) “green allopathy” which uses natural substances with the intent to suppress or eliminate symptoms such as the use of St John’s Wort for depression, and (2) traditional naturopathy, which uses natural substances, nutrition, and other practices with the intent to remove obstacles to healing and stimulate one’s vital force to heal the problematic health condition.
Traditional naturopathy holds the belief that we all have an innate natural mechanism (or vital force) that heals if that power is not impeded by poor lifestyle choices like bad diet and smoking, faulty genetics, or pathogens that weaken and overwhelm the vital force.
Homeopathy also holds a belief in the healing power of nature and the vital force, and is more closely aligned with traditional naturopathy than with green allopathy in that it does not seek to isolate and suppress symptoms. Instead, homeopathy seeks to stimulate the vital force to restore the individual’s constitutional health.
Homeopathy treats the whole person, not the symptom. Two individuals with asthma, for example, are likely to need two very different homeopathic remedies because they are quite different in family history, life experience, attitude, exposures to environmental toxins and pathogens, etc.
Perhaps THE major difference between homeopathy and natural medicine is how the medicines themselves are made. Natural medicines tend to use substances that can be identified under a microscope. That is, they use roots, stems, leaves, berries, salts, and other constituents of things found in nature.
Homeopathic remedies may start with a leaf – say, for example, a poison ivy leaf – but in transforming it into the remedy Rhus Tox, that leaf has been pulverized, soaked in alcohol, distilled and concussed, then diluted multiple times until no trace of the poison ivy leaf itself can be detected under a microscope. Homeopathy is a vibrational or subtle energy system of medicine, and that is an essential difference from natural medicine which operates on a much more microscopically gross level.

When my doctor told me that my blood pressure was elevated, it came as quite a surprise. My numbers had always been good, so when the doctor told me it was 140/90, I knew something was way off. That was about 20 points higher on both the diastolic and systolic readings than normal.
I began monitoring it daily as it continued to creep up, all the way to 159/106, which was way too high. I was understandably worried as to why it was going up. I reassessed all my activities and current medications, trying to come up with a strategy to deal with it, rather than immediately resorting to taking blood pressure medication. Medication has always been the last resort for me to deal with health issues. I know several people who started on BP meds along the way, are now taking two BP meds, and who still have high blood pressure. I wanted to avoid that route, if at all possible.
As you may already know, prolonged high blood pressure can lead to serious health problems, such as stroke, heart attack, heart failure or kidney failure. The sneaky thing is that high blood pressure is silently doing its damage with few warning signs. High blood pressure damages the arteries, in turn, seriously restricting blood flow to all major organs.
I reassessed my medications which is one long-term prescription, along with multivitamins, and an occasional dose of ibuprofen for arthritis. I couldn’t think of anything that was the culprit. I then looked at my emotional and physical state. Aside from the usual ups and downs of life, there were no major issues going on. I was in decent shape physically, even though I had needed to drop a few pounds for several years. I looked at my salt intake and it was moderate.
So, what was the culprit for my blood pressure’s sudden increase? There was one thing I had initially overlooked. I had started using a progesterone cream about five months prior to my blood pressure increase. It was a simple over-the-counter cream made from wild yams. It came from a reputable health food store and the store owner said they have hundreds of customers who have used it successfully for many years. It is sold as a mild hormone replacement therapy for women.
The cream seemed to have done wonders for me. I felt better emotionally and physically than I had in several years. My overall health was noticeably improved. My skin and hair seemed to come back to life. My mood was better. Nevertheless, using the cream was the only thing I had done differently prior to my blood pressure increase. I took a closer look at the dosing instructions on the jar and realized that I had been using the cream continuously instead of the recommended 24 days a month. I was supposed to be using it for approximately three weeks per month, then taking a week off.
Good grief. Pay attention and follow directions – isn’t that what they taught me in kindergarten? I stopped using the cream and within two weeks my blood pressure started to return to normal. After three weeks off the cream, my blood pressure was 116/68, much better numbers. I plan to try the cream again but this time I will use it according to the directions.
My cardiologist did say that some hormone replacement therapies can drive up blood pressure numbers, even when used correctly, so I will be very careful the next time around. Check back with me – I’ll write a follow-up on my continuing saga with hormone cream and blood pressure.
