Spiritual aspects of the Alcoholics Anonymous program (AA) assessed
AA has exploded into a worldwide movement that has struggled to broaden it’s Christian beginnings into a spiritual by-way that can accommodate any faith- or even the absence of faith. Even so, AA boldly states its purpose as helping an individual establish a relationship with a power greater than themselves who can “help them live a life that is happily and usefully whole”.
When one stops and reflects on the nature of alcoholism, we can easily observe the violation of personal values, the despair, the hopelessness, the individual and familial pain, the loss of jobs, marriages, relationships, respect, self-esteem, the list could go on endlessly. Alcoholics, to a person, are well used to dealing with a power greater than themselves. It is alcoholism!
Alcohol has been The Ruler Supreme despite many an alcoholics best efforts to make it otherwise. Saying or wishing it isn’t so has almost no impact at all in slowing the process of this fatal disease.
So establishing a relationship with a higher power in AA, is really more like shifting one’s reliance to a NEW higher power. One that substitutes life for death, creativity for self-destruction, truth for pathological self-deception, connection and love for isolation and broken relationships and of course, sobriety for drunken-ness.
We can leave religion to the clerics. There is no recommended denomination or religion involved in Alcoholics Anonymous. The spiritual food of AA is for everyone. It is for all beliefs and even for the dis-believers or non-believers. AA does not make hard terms with anyone who seeks sobriety. You say what the power greater than yourself is. It is your understanding of that power that will contribute to sobriety.
Perhaps the group itself is a power greater than the individual. After all, the group has been able to do something the individual has not. Stay sober!
Finally, AA is a program that in it’s essence does not tell one what to think, or even how to think. It teaches individuals how to be free. Initially, free of alcohol and ultimately free to live, not a life of religious dogma, but in the spirit of service, kindness and understanding.
Can True Utopian Socialism Ever Become a Reality?
The practicality of socialism is often put under scrutiny by it’s opponents. For socialism to reach the wider population, these criticisms need to be confronted head on. Unlike the bureaucratic governments of today, socialists need to understand why these criticisms have arisen, and more importantly – understand how to explain and counter the attacks against socialism. Human nature and greed are some of the biggest reasons that people decide to disregard socialism. I think that the practicality of socialism is often criticized because people understand that capitalism is flawed on at least some level, but think that it’s worth putting up with these flaws rather than changing the system.
In response to the criticism of socialism not being practical because of human nature, I have to ask to ask a question to those making such criticisms. Capitalism is a system that thrives on greed and self-enrichment – why is a system that not just allows but encourages the worst of human nature better than a system that seeks to prevent and control this greed and the darker sides of human nature? Do not misunderstand me though, there are certainly barriers in terms of the transition from a capitalist society to a socialist one. I don’t believe that these barriers are fundamental, permanent or fueled by human nature. By working together towards a common cause, anything is possible.
Marx was the founding father of ideological socialism/communism, and his works are often what people refer to when they talk about pure utopian communism. People will often then see Marxism as being the same as socialism – socialism is Marxism and Marxism is socialism. This is simply not true. Karl Marx began building the foundations for socialism through his intricate analysis of the capitalist world and it’s flaws. Through Marx’s critique, socialism as we know it today was slowly constructed through the works and efforts of many different people.
Lenin was just one of these collaborators to socialist theory. Using Marxism and it’s economic theory, Vladimir Lenin created his own flavor of Marxism; a line of theory that would later become known as Marxism-Leninism – what people usually mean when they refer to communism. Lenin gave Marxism a different and more practical character. Instead of just describing a socialist utopia, Lenin wrote about how true communism could be achieved from a post-revolutionary nation. He came up with the concept of a vanguard party having to guide the revolutionized nation through socialism until reaching the utopia that Marx described – at which point, the vanguard would dissolve and a stateless society would be formed.
Returning to the original question, can true ideological socialism ever become a reality? I don’t think so. For the socialist, there will always be flaws, injustice and unfairness in our world – the goal of socialism is to eliminate these flaws in favor of social equality for everybody. We may never reach this utopia, however as we strive to reach this utopian state – our society will progress and become more like the world that was once only ever envisioned in ideological socialism. Even under socialism, these flaws will still be present – some of the same flaws we see under capitalism, however with the power of common effort – I really believe that we can work together to solve these flaws.
The One and Only Way to Lose Weight and Keep It Off
It’s the beginning of a new year and the foremost thing on a lot of people’s minds is losing those excess holiday pounds. Weight loss is the #1 New Year’s resolution, yet most people give up on their diet well before the end of January rolls around. The main reason of their failure is they either go all out with a new workout routine and their diet is lacking, or it’s the other way around- going on a strict diet but not exercising. Weight loss is a total body and mind effort. The only way to lose weight properly and keep it off is to use a totally holistic approach.
Nutrition plays a main part in successful weight loss. I’m not speaking of lowering fat and calorie intake. I’m speaking of total proper nutrition. The problem with most diets is they concentrate solely on reduced calories and fat grams. This does not address each person’s individual nutritional needs. A diabetic has different needs than a non diabetic. A vegetarian has different needs than a meat lover. Many people have gluten sensitivities that need different diets from everyone else. Simply reducing caloric intake can cause some of these people to actually gain weight instead of losing it. For some, a high protein, low carb diet is the way to go. For others, an equal balance of protein and carbs will produce better results.
Proper nutrition includes fruit and vegetables, lean meats, whole grains and plenty of water. Let’s say your calorie goal for the day is 1500 calories. You can, of course, drink 1500 calories worth of soda. But how would you feel? Or, you can consume 1500 calories worth of quality protein, fresh vegetables and whole grain based carbs and feel wonderful. By applying proper nutrition to your weight loss efforts, you will shed excess fat and not suffer the hunger pangs of popular calorie strict diets.
Exercise plays another important part in weight loss. Exercise should not consume your entire day. There is no reason to spend hours a day in the gym if you are performing exercises that aren’t right for your body type. Everyone needs cardio. This includes walking, jogging, swimming- anything that raises your heart rate. While any type of cardio is beneficial, it needs to raise your heart rate at least 35% above your resting heart rate to provide fat burning benefits. 30 minutes a day of proper cardio for your weight and body type is plenty to boost fat loss.
Weight training is pertinent to weight loss. Most people who go on strict diets may increase their cardio to burn calories, but they ignore weights. This does lead to weight loss, but it is mostly muscle loss. We are looking for actual fat loss. Many women won’t touch weights because they’re afraid they’ll ‘bulk up’. This is simply not true. Women are not built to be as bulky as men when lifting weights. Weight lifting for women helps to build stronger bones and provide lean, smooth muscle. It also increases fat burn.
Knowing your body type can give you a huge advantage in your weight loss routine. Apple shaped people carry more fat around their mid section than a pear shape. No one exercise is perfect for all body types.
Stress plays a huge role in weight gain and the inability to lose it. When you are under stress, your body produces cortisol. Cortisol is known to increase your appetite and slow metabolism. Of course, this will negate your weight loss efforts. While it is impossible to lead a totally stress free life, there are ways to lowers your stress levels to encourage weight loss. Meditation, a warm bath at night or sitting quietly in a dark room for just a few minutes a day can do wonders to lower your stress levels.
Herbs and other natural supplements can be beneficial in helping those looking to shed extra pounds. There is no one ‘magic’ diet pill. Many of the popular diet pills on the market now contain stimulants that carry nasty side effects. These pills are designed for one thing- to make money for the company producing them. However, there are many herbs that promote detoxification and glandular cleansing that help the body process food more efficiently so it isn’t stored in the body as fat.
The only way to know which diet, exercise, meditation and supplement regime is right for your body and weight loss goals is to consult a professional who is qualified in these areas.

Benefits of Roses
“A rose by any other name would smell as sweet,” is a common paraphrase from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The rose captivates on many different levels and has done. Are any of those levels helpful to our health?
The rose is a member of the same family as stone fruits like apples, peaches, apricots and plums. They have many of the same benefits, though it’s kind of hard to associate this particular flower with health benefits.
Beauty: The rose isn’t a vain beauty but a helpful one. The scent and sight can help reduce stress levels. They are also associated with increased creativity…a miniature rose next to the computer could help the next time writer’s block strikes.
Health Benefits: Like other members of its family, when the petals fall from the bush a small fruit is formed. This fruit rarely gets larger than three quarters of an inch in diameter, but it is packed with vitamin C. I have to admit that they are hard to work with. There are several seeds packed tightly together inside the fruit and the peel and flesh are hard. It works best as a jelly or in tea.
Aromatherapy: While the scent of roses is often thought of as romantic, that is not its only job in aromatherapy. It is often used as an antidepressant and is said to do wonders for various “female complaints.” One suggestion is that it could be useful in cases of impotence. The biggest problem is the expense. It takes a lot of work to get the essential oils from the flowers and the price matches the efforts.
Color Guide: I’m not positive that this color guide is used much anymore, but at one time the color of the flowers had various meanings. The most common is the red rose, which is associated with love and romance. White roses are linked to innocence and/or brides. One meaning of light pink roses is sympathy while a black rose is linked with death or separation.
Roses are a great gift for a loved one and a pretty bush to plant around your property. The miniature variety often graces window sills or counters. The next time you feel a little depressed or a problem with creativity, look for some roses. After all, we are often admonished to “stop and smell the roses…”
Reinventing The Wheel For Tomorrow

New buyers want to kick the tires when they’re seeking out a new ride. We’ve all heard the tire company slogan “there’s a lot riding on your tires” but they are typically taken for granted and misunderstood. Tires have come a long way since the thin, fragile varieties sported by the earliest automobiles. Today’s tires are built to withstand all types of weather and road conditions and new developments are transcending the very concept of tire. In the past year, the world has been introduced to self-inflating and even airless tires.
A brief early history
The word tire comes from craftsmen tying wheel segments of iron and steel around the wooden wheels of carts and wagons. In 1839, Charles Goodyear developed vulcanised rubber as a tire cushion by adding sulphur to melted latex derived from Amazonian tree sap. Robert Thompson invented the pneumatic tire in 1846 and after rims were introduced, Michelin made the first pneumatic tire for an auto in 1895. Many tire companies began to appear by the beginning of the twentieth century, improving on the basic design by making them sturdier, with better traction and fuel efficiency. The past century has seen continuous development in tire technology, from synthetic rubber to steel-belted radial suspension.
Tomorrow’s tires
Advances in tire materials and technologies have enabled optimal performance and manufacturability, which is ever evolving. A worldwide shortage of natural rubber is a major concern for today’s tire manufacturers, necessitating increased usage of synthetic rubber or other alternatives. Vehicles have been rolling along just fine on cushions of air encased in rubber but recent innovations in airless tire technology seem poised to usher in a paradigm shift.
Airless Tires
Michelin first announced the Tweel in 2005, combining the words “tire” and “wheel” in name and concept. This invention rejects the traditional wheel hub assembly in favour of mounting a solid inner hub directly to the axle. Flexible spokes form a honeycomb-style web to replace the air pressure of pneumatic tires, making it look like a futurist bicycle wheel. Both Michelin and Brigestone’s airless tires are in the development stages but off-road vehicle specialist Polaris has developed their own version that is already in use by the U.S. military – after extensive tests such as running them over train spikes and firing at them with heavy artillery. Polaris’ airless tires run silently and the open design prevents dirt, branches, and rocks from getting stuck inside. The absorbing qualities of the spokes can make smoother and safer rides. They won’t hit the off-road market till at least next year and their eventual usage on the average automobile remains uncertain.
Anyone who has become a mechanic is used to seeing clients coming in with dangerously inadequate tire pressure. The Goodyear self-inflating tire, which was named one of Time Magazine’s best inventions of 2012, could help change that. An internal pressure regulator opens to allow air to flow into a pumping tube, which is squeezed through an inlet valve as the wheel turns until the optimal level is reached – all without the driver realizing anything was wrong. While it’s safe to say that tires will continue to need periodic maintenance, such recent changes in technology should be of importance to anyone in mechanic school.
