. . . I saw him have fits; he was very twisted up and seemed in great agony.
– Jane Hedley, trial of Mary Ann Cotton, March 1873
The public complains loudly and with an agonized collective voice when a murderer “gets off”.
Examples of classic haywire justice can be found in any period in history. Lizzie Borden was acquitted for the August 1892 hatchet murders of her step-mother and biological father. In the early 1990s, O. J. Simpson was set free for the murder of his ex-wife and a male friend of hers after one of history’s longest murder trials. Casey Anthony’s July 2011 “Not Guilty” verdict in Florida in the death of her toddler daughter left many shaking their heads. These are but three instances of almost certainly guilty defendants literally getting away with murder.

Traditional Chinese Medicine has evolved significantly since it took birth in ancient China thousands of years ago. A considerable number of health conditions are treated using acupuncture, herbs and various methods by TCM professionals.
• Commonly used treatments are acupuncture and herbal remedies. Cupping, moxibustion, dietary therapy, massage, and mind body therapy are other practices followed.
• The concept of body functioning, reasons for illness and treatment is totally different compared to Western medicine.
• Scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness of this form of medicine is limited. Though acupuncture is considered safe if properly practiced, some of the Chinese herbal remedies may not be safe.
• Always enquire about the qualifications of the professional before undergoing treatment.
• To ensure safe care keep all your health care providers informed about the practices you follow to manage health.
Traditional Chinese Medicine follows the age old Taoism philosophy and is almost 5,000 years old. It is practiced alongside western medicine in most clinics and hospitals of China. It was confirmed in 1997 that around 10,000 professionals treated over 1 million patients in the United States. The National Health Interview Survey of 2007 revealed that around 3.1 million patients in U.S. had undergone acupuncture the previous year.
Traditional Chinese Medicine is based on the Chinese perception of human body which is quite different from western concepts. Humans are perceived as microcosms of the universe that is interlinked with nature and its forces. Human body is one organic entity with various organs having independent functions. Health and disease is the outcome of the balance between these functions.
• Yin-Yang theory – All life is shaped by two complementary but opposing forces.
• Vital energy termed qi circulates through the body along a network of pathways called meridians. Health is an outcome of maintaining harmony in the circulation of qi.
• Eight principles like cold/heat, interior/exterior, deficiency/excess and yin/yang are used for evaluating symptoms and determining conditions. The five elements, earth, water, metal, wood and fire relate to various organs and tissues and are used to elaborate body functions.
Traditional Chinese treatment advocates personalized treatment. Four methods are used to analyze a patient’s condition.
Traditional Chinese Medicine professionals use a wide range of therapies for curing diseases and promoting health. The common ones are acupuncture and herbal medicine.
• Herbal Medicine – TCM professionals use a reference book called Chinese materia medica that lists a number of medicinal substances classified by the kind of impact they have on the human body. Different parts of plants, minerals and animal products are used for treatment.
• Acupuncture – Professionals insert thin needles into the skin at specific points to remove blocks in the flow of qi.
A penis discharge can be caused by many things, but it doesn’t always have to be a serious condition. Here are some tips on how to diagnose a penis discharge and when men should see their doctor.
Although semen is a discharge that is natural during sexual stimulation or intercourse, there are non-seminal discharges that are not normal. Sometimes pain or blood can accompany the discharge, and this is when a doctor should be consulted. Some causes of penis discharge include the following:
Most cases of urethritis are caused by bacteria that leads to an infection in the urethra. This bacteria does not always have to be linked to a sexually transmitted disease; it could be bacteria that is present in the stool that leads to the infection, such as E.coli. Antibiotics are administered to treat urethritis.
This is a sexually transmitted disease that has urethritis as its most common symptom. The penis discharge associated with gonorrhoea usually contains pus, and it occurs in 95 per cent of men who are diagnosed with this STD. However, in the remaining men, the discharge can be cloudy or white. Gonorrhoea can be spread by oral, anal as well as vaginal sex. If the condition is left untreated, it can cause infertility. Gonorrhoea can be treated with a course of antibiotics.
This is the most common type of penis discharge and it usually affects men between the ages of 20 and 35. It is caused by various organisms, such as chlamydia trachomatis, ureaplasma urealyticum, herpes simplex and tricohomonas. These infections vary in the approach to treatment and should be evaluated by a doctor.
When men have this infection it can lead to painful urination and a watery penis discharge. Chlamydia Trachomatis can be treated with antibiotics.
This viral infection can cause outbreaks of painful sores in the genital area. The difficulty of genital herpes is that it can occur even when condoms are used during sex because the lesions can form on parts of the genital area where the condom does not cover the skin. The herpes virus can be transmitted from one partner to another when the infected partner does not show any signs of having sores. Medicine can keep the virus under control, although genital herpes does not have a cure.
This is a common sexually transmitted disease that is caused by a parasite called Triochomonas Vaginalis. Common symptoms of Trichomonas Vaginalis include pain when passing urine and a mild penis discharge. Trichomonas Vaginalis can be treated with antibiotics, and it can be prevented by using condoms during sexual activities.
Caring for the penis
Although penis hygiene cannot guarantee that a man will not develop an STD, it should form part of a man’s regular routine. A daily shower, followed by application of a high-quality penis health cream, can help to wash away organisms that can lead to infection and to boost the body’s natural defences against disease. All sexually active men are urged to use a condom for all sexual encounters; men who have latex issues can use a condom made from alternative materials. Regular checks and testing for STDs is also an important aspect of maintaining a healthy penis.
If you’re looking for information on herbal cures for your anxiety, then you’ll find just what you’re looking for here. I’ve listed 5 popular herbal remedies for anxiety that you can get at your local health food store or herbalist.
There are many herbs that can be used in the natural treatment of anxiety. But, before we go any further, although herbal cures are generally looked upon as pretty safe and natural, they can have some negative outcomes for some people, so always consult with your doctor before starting on any such remedy.
Right then, here are five herbal cures for anxiety that seem to be finding favor with many people…
St. John’s Wort
This can be effective in treating anxiety because it acts as a natural SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) which are very often prescribed for both general anxiety and depression. This herb works in much the same way, by raising the serotonin in the brain, thereby reducing anxiety, stress, etc. It helps to control your mood, if you will.
Chamomile is a very popular dietary herbal remedy. And apart from anxiety, it is used to help combat a variety of disorders such as insomnia, digestive problems, skin infections, and more. You can get it in liquid extracts, tinctures, capsules, even creams I believe. But many people like to take it as a tea.
Scullcap has been used for ages in the treatment of the nervous system. It has been used in the treatment of anxiety, panic attacks, depression, tension, insomnia, etc. It contains a flavonoid called ‘scutellarein’ which it is believed acts as a natural sedative, and also, causes increased production of endorphins that promote the feeling of well-being and calmness.
It is believed that the flavonoids and alkaloids in passionflower help to regulate your brain’s neurotransmitters and so help to reduce anxiety and calm the mind. You can get this herb in dried, capsule or liquid extract form.
There is some clinical evidence that valerian root has some very mild tranquilizing and sedative effects, although less than that given by drug-based medication. More studies are required, but many people who use it report that they are calmer, with less tension and stress. You can take it in tablet, capsule, and liquid extract form,or, as an infusion.
These are just a small sample of all the herbal remedies for anxiety out there. Just ask at your favorite outlet for more information and dosages. But remember, talk to your doctor before taking any herbal remedy.
But, although herbs can be effective, they basically just manage your mood and /or help to calm you in much the same way as drugs, but without most of the serious side effects. They help you ‘cope’ with your anxiety.
And if your suffer from general anxiety, you no doubt have, and are still, suffering from anxiety (panic) attacks. The problem is that once having suffered a panic attack there is always an underlying fear (conscious or unconscious) of suffering another, because the symptoms of an attack are just so horrible.
This ongoing fear enhances your already high general anxiety levels and can actually trigger a panic attack. This is your cycle of anxiety that you need to break-out of in order to prevent further panic attacks and then cure your general anxiety.
Chapter 4: In which I Lose Faith
“Ah, I wondered when you were going to ask that, you see things normal people donÂ’t see, you have visions and you get incredible migraines, you have the gift of sight, you can see into the world of people you love, if you think about them for long enough and hard enough.” Said James wisely.
“So thatÂ’s what my dreams were when I was little and the vision of my father?” I asked.”Exactly,” said James, “But let’s not worry about mastering your gift before we take care of all the people who are trying to hunt you down, so that you can undo the curse and fulfill the prophecy that comes with the legend of the gift.” Continued James.
“Wait, there’s a legend and a curse too? When were you going to tell me?” I inquired, puzzled.”A different day, just put it out of your mind for now.” He replied, ending the conversation for good. I put Ric down and gave him his favorite teddy bear to keep him occupied for a while and went upstairs to practice my violin. It was pretty uneventful until dinner.”You are pretty good at that.” Came James’ voice from around the door, his head popped around just enough for me to see him smiling.
“That was almost a compliment.” I smiled back at him.”Dinner is ready.” He said.”You made dinner?” I asked incredulously.”Yes, now come on.” He responded, grabbing my arm and dragging me behind him all the way down to the dining room where the table was set and two chairs and Ric’s high chair were set around it.
“Take a seat, dinner will be served in approximately two minutes.” Said James before bowing out of the room, not unlike a waiter might do in a fancy restaurant. James came back in less than thirty seconds, holding two plates and a small dish for Ric.
“Wow, what is all this in aid of?” I asked rather incredulously.”Well, I realized that I may have been a little sexist ear-” He started.”A little!” I scoffed.”Yes a little, donÂ’t push your luck with me, anyway this is to say sorry.” He finished.”Well, I donÂ’t know if I can accept your apology… persuade me!”"Excuse me?” He asked looking a little confounded.”Persuade me to accept your apology, plead your case.” I replied laughing a little at myself.
“Umm… okay, you should accept my apology because I am incredibly good-looking and have an insane sense of humor as well as being able to converse with you in a civilized manner… Oh and I can cook.” He finished, looking rather smug and pleased with himself.
I looked directly at him like a judge would look at a man convicted of murder but most unlike a judge, I didnÂ’t see him waver under my glare.”Well, Mr. Davenport your statement is under scrutiny from the judge, judge Alba. Do you plead guilty or not guilty?” I put on my stern voice and grabbed a pair of glasses from the cabinet behind me, perched them on the end of my nose and spoke.
“Guilty, your honor.” Responded James, pretending to look like he was being reprimanded.”Well, considering the guilty plead I am allowing you off on bail.” I announced and slammed a bread roll down on the table for dramatic affect.
James laughed a laugh that seemed to go on forever and so did I. We laughed and even little Ric joined in and laughed even though I donÂ’t think he knew what he was laughing about. The rest of the evening went in a blur. James and I talked about everything that had happened since he was here and who everyone was. I learned that the man James was talking to last night was Sebastian Lithwaite and he was an ex-marine that used to fight with my dad. James told me all the stories of the men in the forests that his mother used to tell him when he was little. We went and sat in the room about half an hour after I had put Ric to bed, James continued his flawed gentlemanly attitude and washed the dishes and put them away.
I wandered into what used to be the largest parlor. It was always my favorite room, decorated in the deepest red, almost the color of red wine, with matching, heavy, silk curtains. The floors were a cream color and the carpet was so soft under your feet, as you walked it felt like you could be walking on a cloud. There was a grand mirror and a beautiful antique chandelier that hung from the high ceiling. I flicked on the light and went over to the silk curtains, remembering how nanny used to always pull the left one closed and then the right over the top of it, to ensure that no light got through them.
“What are you doing?” Whispered James into my ear. I hadn’t realized that he had entered the room, never mind that he was standing behind me. I flung around to see him step back just in time to dodge my elbow that was stuck out at an odd angle.”Sorry,” I said, but my voice sounded too loud next to him whisper. “Sorry,” I repeated in a quieter tone.
He laughed again, the whole night seemed to be a monotony of laughter, “It’s fine, you didnÂ’t hit me.” He said in a tone that matched my own. “I brought you this, I donÂ’t know if you’ve ever had it before but it’s nice.” He said and held up a wine glass that gleamed as the light reflected off of the glass and the deep red liquid that was held inside matched the color of the walls and curtains.
“Wine?” I asked rather dumbfound, it was not proper for a lady to have alcohol unless it was a small amount at Christmas or at a dinner party.”Yes, Brunello Montalcino Caparzo, 1997 I believe.”"Wow, the only words I heard were yes, 1997, I, and believe.” I said feeling more stupid than ever. I should know this, mama used to tell me all the time when I used to help her set up dinner parties.
“So basically you misunderstood the Italian, I think I can forgive that.” He chuckled, a low sound in the back of his throat. “Anyway the Italian is just the name of the man who made the wine.” He went on to explain.”Oh, well I feel stupid.”"Don’t, you’re not stupid but wine obviously isnÂ’t your forte,” he chuckled again and the lights went out.
“Oh hell, James where are you?” I asked frantically, wafting my hand around in midair.”I’m here,” he said from behind me and he touched the tops of my arms. “Go to your room and lock the door, this is not going to be pretty!” He exclaimed. I would have done as he asked, if it had not been that dark and I could see who or what was going to come for James but I couldn’t and it was, so I stood there, frozen.
“Ali, why aren’t you moving?” Hissed James in my general direction.”Because I can’t see!” I hissed back. “What did you call me?” I asked, astonished, that was dad’s old nickname for me and I hadnÂ’t heard it used, since the last Christmas dad came home, over five years ago.
“Just go!” Came James’ voice but it was too late, a huge noise around the back of the kitchen startled me and I stepped on James’ foot.”So-” I started but caught a glimpse of the look on James’ face in a brief moment when the moon left the safety of the clouds to peek down on the world.Stay in here and hide behind the curtains, sit on the windowsill with your feet up and open the window to mask your scent.
The message popped into my head, without being spoken aloud and I was sure it was from James. Horror and shock filled my face and James must have noticed because he winked at me and motioned his head towards the window ledge. I climbed up and pulled my legs up to my chest, James’ hands came around the curtain and pulled it shut.
Good I can’t see you at all but I can still smell you, open the window.I did as he said and the chilly September air hit me, I shivered. Not perfect but it will do. DO NOT MOVE!
And then James was gone. I did not hear him change into his wolf form, but I dare not move to check. A number of loud crashes and the sound of glass shattering came what seemed like hours after James left but I knew it was only a minute or two. I heard a blood curdling scream and closed my eyes. I did not know who it belonged to but I had an awful feeling it was not the one I wished it to come from. Grunting breath preceded slow swishing of a tail as a mighty beast entered the room. I held as still as I could and closed my eyes as if somehow this would help. It was moving ever closer, with every step it took my heartbeat got faster until it was so fast and so loud I could not hear a single thing over it. I was surprised that this didnÂ’t give away my position. The beast seemed to be limping, every other step was heavier than the previous one. A sudden gust of wind came and went, but knew then it was enough to give the wolf my scent. I knew then that it was over, it had been James’ earsplitting scream that I had heard. He was dead and now I was going to join him. One thought stuck out among the rest of the pleas that were going through my head.
I love you James
