Ecumen announced today that Gilbert (Gil) Acevedo, who serves as deputy commissioner of veterans health care for the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs, will become Ecumens senior vice president of operations effective October 24. Acevedo recently announced he is stepping down from his position at the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs.

Acevedo was recruited to Minnesota from California in 2008 to provide leadership to Minnesotas Veterans Homes, which include a variety of housing options and services across the state. He assumed leadership as the Minneapolis Veterans Home was in the midst of a well-publicized, long-term performance crisis. On Tuesday, it was announced that the five veterans homes in the state were awarded Best in Class designations from Pinnacle Quality Insight, a customer-satisfaction firm, on a variety of care and service areas.

Under his leadership, the Minnesota Veterans Homes system moved to a person-centered care approach and rebuilt its credibility and reputation with state and federal regulators. The Veterans Homes unleashed a number of innovations, including developing a centralized pharmacy system for the Department of Veterans Affairs, moving the Veterans Homes towards Medicare and Medicaid certification and third-party billing, and developing leading employee training and quality programs.

Before joining MDVA he served with the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CDVA) Home Division for six years. He contributed to the CVDA in several administrative capacities and was appointed veterans home administrator by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in February 2006.

Acevedo has spent his life serving his country and the veterans who have defended our freedom. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1978 as a hospital corpsman and retired a command master chief. In his 23 years of naval service, Ret. Command Master Chief Acevedo served on board the USS Tecumseh SSBN 628 (Blue and Gold) in the 3rd FSSG, 1st Marine Division, 1st FSSG, as a basic hospital corps school instructor and an enlisted detailer. Acevedo served as the command master chief for the 1st Medical Battalion, Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton and Field Medical Service School, Camp Pendleton.

Acevedo was born and raised in the South Bronx, N.Y. He earned a bachelors degree in health care management from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill., and a masters degree in health care administration from National University, based in San Diego, Calif. He holds certification in residential care for the elderly administrator and is a member of the American College of Health Care Administrators and Executives, life member of the Disabled American Veterans, American Veterans, American Legion, United States Submarine International, life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Military Order of the Cooties and the Marine Corps League. He and his wife, Karen, along with their son, Tony, live in Rosemount, Minn.
