It is a fact of life that disposable razors are expensive. just when they seem to be beginning to get a little cheaper, they add on a new extra-comfortable handle or more blades and the cost cycle begins all over again. if you want to opt-out of the disposable razor rat-race, though, there is a simple solution: get an electric shaver.

Electric shaving has lots of advantages. you don’t need water, you don’t need shaving foam. in fact, all you really need is some form of electricity, either batteries or mains power, and occasionally some cleaning solution to get old hairs out of the razor. It is also almost impossible to cut yourself shaving if you use an electric shaver, as they have special safety covers to avoid this happening.

However, there are also some downsides. Electric shavers can often be expensive to buy in the first place – a worthwhile investment in many cases, but that doesn’t make it any less off-putting at the time. They also tend to run down their charge relatively quickly, making them impractical for travel use in places where you can’t get electricity, or where you would need some kind of adapter to make the electricity supply work.

If you’re going to buy an electric shaver, there are a few features that you should look out for, as they are very nice to have. the most important is the battery life, but it is also useful to have a battery indicator, so you can see whether the shaver is going to run out of juice soon or not. Many shavers now come with a combined cleaning and charging stand, which can be good for keeping your shaver clean without any extra effort. a final important factor is the shaver’s weight and shape, with the best shavers being very light indeed and much easier to hold than cheaper ones.

Jacob Schick invented the world’s first electric dry shaver with oscillating blades. this breakthrough opened the doors for developing more revolutionized and quality electric shavers.

Kinds of Electric Shavers

Electric shavers come with either foil or rotary cutting razor blades. the kinds of shavers don’t really matter, it just depends of the user’s comfortability and use. However, most of women’s shavers use foil cutters.

Foil Electric Shaver

A foil electric shaver has one or two floating heads designed to glide over facial contours, with razor cutters that oscillate behind a perforated screen. Several people attest that foil shavers, on the average, beat the men’s rotaries by a whisker for the closest and cleanest shave.

Rotary Electric Shaver

On the other hand, a rotary shaver has three or four floating heads designed to glide over facial contours, with razor cutters that spin behind a very fine grid. Rotary shavers tend to be more quiet to use and easier to clean than foil shavers.

In caring for one’s electric shaver, foil and cutter sets need to be replaced at least once a year. as the cutter gets duller, the foil gradually gets thinner with it. Replacing the cutter with a new and sharp one under a thinning foil can break a hole in the foil which could lead to a cut or razor bump.

Aside from being informed of the pros and cons of the kinds of electric shavers, one should also consider the features one should find and look for in a shaver.

Battery Charger

When purchasing an electric shaver, the package should always have a battery charger. a fully-charged battery may take 1 to 12 hours on standby and should provide at least seven shaves. Several models allow a five-minute emergency charge, which is good for one shave.

Automatic Shut-off

In line with the battery charger, it is also convenient and energy-saving if the charger shuts off automatically when the battery is fully charged. Like other electric gadgets, the battery charger plug needs to be pulled out from the socket as soon as the shaver is fully charged. Overcharging might reduce the shaver’s battery life.

Power Cord

Nowadays, quite a number of electric shavers come with an electrical cord that lets one shave by plugging in the electrical cord. this is a very useful feature if one forgot to recharge the battery.

Electric shavers get hair build up inside after some time, it is recommended to clean it occasionally to lengthen its life and also for sanitation purposes. most shavers come with a special cleaning brush designed for that unit or model. if your shaver runs on a power outlet, make sure you unplug it before attempting to clean it off. Unclip the cutter block by lifting off its support and start by cleaning the debris off the cutter block. Dip the cutter block in soapy water or in a razor cleaning solution that can be bought together with a razor.

Check the contacts of your shaver and apply electrical contact cleaner to rusty parts. After cleaning and completely drying it off, put the electric shaver parts back together. Turn in on and spray the head lightly with shaving head lubricant to decrease friction between the foil and the head. Before every shave, remember to spray the lubricant on the head.

Years ago, a listener called my show after I had talked about the razor wars, when Gillette or Schick rolled out their latest model with 14 blades or whatever it was at the time. I was making fun of their marketing ploys and high prices back then by talking about my cheap disposable razors.

The caller said he was an engineer and that he had the real money-saving secret when it came to razors. He told me that drying my disposable razor after each use would make it last for months. Blades degrade from moisture, he explained, not from the actual friction or wear of shaving my stubble every day.

So I tried blotting my disposable razor dry on a towel after each use. That’s not the way he suggested I dry it, but I opted for a lazy man’s approach and it has worked for me. (Others recommend using alcohol or a little drying machine you can buy at the drug store.)

I found that by drying the blade on my towel, I could routinely go eight, 10 or even 12 months on a single disposable razor without cutting myself.

I have a lifetime supply of two 55-count bags of Schick double-edged disposables that I purchased on clearance several years ago at BJ’s Wholesale Club. the price I paid works out to be about 17 cents per razor.

Paying just pennies per blade sounded good to me when fancy razor blades can be $4 a pop.

I know this might all sound crazy to you. But if you’re accustomed to using a costly Gillette or Schick blade and you can make it stretch for weeks or even months by simply drying it, we’re talking about real dough you can save over time.
