CINCINNATI, Oct 18, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) –The Cochrane Collaboration, an independent healthcare research group, recently announced the results of a systematic review of power toothbrushes, evaluating the impact different cleaning technologies have on plaque reduction and gingival health. The analysis concluded that, in the short term (four to twelve week period), power brushes with rotating-oscillating technology, pioneered by Oral-B, reduce plaque and gingivitis more than power brushes that move laterally from side-to-side, known as sonic.

furthermore, the analysis reiterated that no other powered designs are consistently superior to manual toothbrushes. This finding was originally reported in the Collaboration’s 2003 “Power versus Manual” toothbrush systematic review, which was the most comprehensive review of power toothbrush studies ever undertaken. The most recent report also found that oscillating-rotating technology alone is consistently superior at removing plaque and reducing gum inflammation in not only the short-term, but over the long-term as well.

In 2005 the Cochrane Collaboration reported that clinical research shows that rotating-oscillating toothbrushes reduce plaque and gingivitis more than manual toothbrushes. In 2011, a separate Cochrane review reported a small but significant difference in plaque and gingivitis reduction for oscillating-rotating power toothbrushes versus side-to-side power toothbrushes. The report did not reach any conclusion about the clinical importance of these results.

The Cochrane Collaboration is an international non-profit organization whose goal is to help people make well-informed decisions about healthcare by preparing, maintaining and promoting accessibility of systematic reviews of the effects of healthcare interventions.

The Collaboration conducted a systematic review of studies comparing the performance of power toothbrush technologies in regards to plaque reduction and gingival health only. To qualify for review, studies had to be at least four weeks in length, randomized, controlled and compare two or more power brushes with different modes of action. After applying their selection criteria, 17 trials with 1,369 total participants qualified for evaluation and inclusion. Seven of these trials were up to three months in length and compared oscillating-rotating power brushes and side-to-side brushes directly. The full report can be accessed at cochrane.org .

Further research is required to assess long-term data and determine if other types of power brushes are better at reducing plaque and gingivitis.

Normal but electric is so worth it! I've heard the Sonic Care Electric toothbrush is definitely the best, but I've got one that was only 10 dollars. It works better at removing plaque in harder places..

Any dentist will agree that a soft bristled toothbrush is the best for removing plaque. A small head on the brush is also better for reaching all the surfaces of all the teeth, but with so many shapes, sizes, bells, and whistles, how do you know which toothbrush to use?

Deciding which tooth brush is right for you is really about your own comfort. aside from soft bristles, which a dentist will prefer for plaque removal and delicate gum tissue, there are numerous shapes, sizes, and types of brushes to try, and there is no real advantage to choosing one over the other.

Small heads are recommended for the best maneuverability, but what is small is relative to the user. When considering the head of the brush, make sure that whatever you choose can easily reach all surfaces of all of your teeth, including those tricky back ones, and unless your dentist prescribes otherwise, stick to soft or even extra-soft bristles.

A regular flat bristled brush will always do, but today’s market has several options for angles of bristles as well. some move opposite ways or be strategically placed in order to help you reach all the parts of your mouth. it cannot be said that any type of angled get up is preferable to a regular old flat head, but if you notice a positive difference in the way the brush cleans, then stick to your findings.

The handle is another feature that lends itself to options galore, and again the missionary standby is always good, but there are some situations in which the ergonomics of a handle may be conducive to more success. those who struggle with disabilities that handicap the hand’s ability to grasp or turn in certain ways may be helped tremendously if able to land on a handle conducive to abilities. A child should definitely be given a short handled brush, and, just like fat crayons are meant to mold to little hands, short and fat brushes are better for little hands as well. Children are less likely to stick to good routines if they are not easy and goals are not attainable. Giving a little one a brush made to fit an adult’s hand and mouth could be just uncomfortable enough to deter good oral hygiene routines and habits.

The old standard will work well on tongue cleaning as well; however, if specialized tongue cleaners that are sometimes found attached to brushes are preferable to you, then it is in your best interest to stick with them. Power b rushes are a good suggestion for those with limits manual dexterity, and because the battery casing usually create a naturally round and thick handle, these may especially be good for children.

The choice is for you and your dentist. whatever the shape or size, the most important factor is that you are comfortable with the product, and whichever product wins your vote, you should replace your toothbrush every three months, when it start to show wear or after experiencing illness as the toothbrush I s a common breeding ground for those kind of bacteria.

I’ve always prided myself on my good teeth. I thought that flossing and brushing was enough…that was until I went to the dentist, and he said I had the beginnings of periodontal disease. that scared the hell out of me. I went home and started using the Sonicare I had bought but never plugged in. that was good, but not enough – I bought a Waterpik because obviously flossing wasn’t cutting it.

I had never used a Waterpik before, and it was some revelation! I’m still amazed that there are some Waterpik oldtimers who say this machine isn’t strong enough…uh, for what? Peeling paint off a brick wall? This thing absolutely knocked my socks off when it came to the PRESSURE.  I started out at 2 and worked my way up to 7 – it still stings like mad, but I’m getting used to it by now. I put Listerine in the tank to increase the anti-bacteria result.

“My dentist went on vacation, and I had to cancel another appointment, so it happened that almost two months had elapsed since the last time I had seen him. in that time, I faithfully brushed with the Sonicare four times a day and used the Waterpik at least once (several tankfuls of water and Listerine worth. so when I returned for my check-up, the dentist was AMAZED. he wasn’t sure what I had done, but he said my gums looked pink and healthy! he had said initially I’d have to get my teeth cleaned every three months because I must be one of those people who gets a tartar build up quicker than other people…well, I had worked religiously on scaling back the plaque. (I had also bought a dental mirror so I could check the back of my front teeth for telltale plaque residue.)

Hmmm, no comment about that plaque…was it because there WASN’T any? My dentist asked me if I had been eating because there was so little build up (I had to tear that out of him because I KNEW he didn’t want to give me credit for working that hard on my dental hygiene!)

Effective dental hygiene can be achieved with regular brushing, good flossing and general health care of the mouth. This requires some work, learning to brush correctly.
